Elected president in 2019, Kaïs Saïed established himself by presenting himself as Tunisia’s “Mr. Clean,” the guardian of the integrity of the constitution and the ideals of the Jasmine Revolution. But barely two years after his election, he dissolved Parliament and seized full powers—a brutal democratic regression that raises fears of a return to past authoritarianism, fifteen years after the winds of freedom born of the Arab Spring.
